Background

NBC Boston launched on January 1, 2017, after NBCUniversal declined to renew its affiliation agreement with longtime Boston NBC affiliate WHDH (Channel 7), opting instead to enter the market directly with its own owned-and-operated station. The station initially broadcast on low-power outlet WBTS-LD and later transitioned to its current Class A license as WBTS-CD, technically licensed to Nashua, New Hampshire, but serving the Boston metro area. NBCUniversal already had a foothold in the Boston market through New England Cable News (NECN), which it had owned since 2012, and through Telemundo affiliate WNEU; all four properties now share studio facilities at the NBCU Boston Media Center in Needham, Massachusetts. The launch was contentious: WHDH's owner sued over the affiliation loss, and the market adjustments took several years to settle.
