Background

NBC (National Broadcasting Company) was founded in 1926 by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) as the United States' first radio network. NBC launched its first commercial television station in 1941 and began regular televised news programming in the late 1940s with broadcasts such as Camel News Caravan. General Electric acquired RCA—and with it NBC—in 1986; Comcast then acquired NBCUniversal in a deal completed in 2013, embedding NBC News inside one of the largest cable and broadband conglomerates in the country. When Comcast spun off most of its cable channels—including MSNBC and CNBC—into a separate publicly traded company called Versant in late 2025 and early 2026, NBC News itself remained within NBCUniversal and was not part of that divestiture. Multiple independent media-bias organizations, including AllSides (rated 'Lean Left') and Media Bias/Fact Check (rated 'Left-Center'), place NBC News to the left of center, though within the mainstream. A September 2025 Pew Research poll found NBC News tied for first place among national news organizations in audience trust. Like nearly all major U.S. broadcast outlets, NBC News subscribes to the Associated Press wire service and publishes AP-sourced reporting alongside its own original journalism.
