Background

NBC (the National Broadcasting Company) was founded as a radio network in 1926 and launched the first regularly scheduled U.S. television newscast in 1940. Its flagship political program, Meet the Press, has aired since 1947, making it the longest-running television program in American history. The Huntley-Brinkley Report dominated evening news ratings throughout the 1960s, often outperforming CBS. NBC launched the business cable channel CNBC in 1989 and co-founded the news cable channel MSNBC with Microsoft in 1996. In 2004, NBC merged with Universal Studios to form NBCUniversal, which Comcast acquired in 2011 and took full control of in 2013. In 2025, MSNBC was separated from NBC News into a distinct corporate entity—later rebranded—severing their shared editorial and production resources. In June 2026, Comcast announced plans to spin off NBCUniversal, including NBC News, Peacock, and Sky, into a standalone publicly traded company. Over the years, NBC News has drawn criticism from conservative media watchdogs for underrepresenting conservative perspectives, and it attracted scrutiny for its early framing of the COVID-19 lab-leak hypothesis; media bias analysts have nonetheless consistently rated it as factually reliable while placing it left of center.
