Background

NBC traces its roots to 1926 as the first major U.S. radio network, later expanding into television and news broadcasting; NBC News grew into one of the "Big Three" broadcast news divisions alongside ABC and CBS. General Electric owned NBCUniversal for decades before selling a controlling stake to Comcast, which completed full ownership in 2013. Under Comcast, NBC News expanded digitally and launched MSNBC as a cable sister network (spun off in 2025-2026 and rebranded MS NOW under the new Versant company, separate from NBC News itself). NBC News has faced periodic controversies over sourcing and editorial judgment, including criticism from both left and right over specific reporting decisions, and a 2018 controversy over its initial handling of allegations against Harvey Weinstein and its own personnel. It has generally been rated as a mainstream outlet with a modest left-of-center lean in U.S. media bias assessments, distinct from the more opinion-driven, further-left MS NOW/former MSNBC. During Trump's second term, NBC News has reported critically on administration actions and has itself faced access restrictions, including exclusion from Pentagon office space and participation in a multi-network protest after CNN and other outlets were banned from White House coverage in September 2026.
