Background
WRC-TV traces its origins to 1939, when RCA—then the parent company of NBC—operated an experimental television station called W3XNB in Washington, D.C. The station received its first commercial license as WNBW and signed on commercially on June 27, 1947, making it the second-oldest licensed commercial television station in the D.C. market. In 1954, the call sign changed to WRC-TV to align with NBC's broader branding under RCA ownership. The station has always been owned by NBC or its corporate parents; ownership passed from RCA to General Electric (which acquired RCA in 1986), then to Comcast after its 2011 acquisition of NBCUniversal. Today, WRC-TV is part of the NBC Owned Television Stations group and shares studio and transmitter facilities in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Northwest Washington with WZDC-CD, a Telemundo-affiliated station. Because of its location in the nation's capital, the station devotes substantial airtime to federal politics and policy, drawing on NBC News's national reporting infrastructure.
