NC Department of State Treasurer (official press releases)
U.S. Republican state government
Background
The office of state treasurer is one of North Carolina's oldest institutions, tracing its roots to 1715 when the Province of North Carolina first appointed a treasurer to manage public revenue. The Department of State Treasurer was formally created by the NC General Assembly in 1971. The treasurer is a statewide elected official who serves as the state's chief financial officer and sole fiduciary for the NC Retirement Systems, covering more than 700,000 public employees and retirees. The office has been held by both Democrats and Republicans: Democrat Janet Cowell served 2009–2017, Republican Dale Folwell 2017–2025, and Republican Brad Briner took office January 1, 2025, after winning with roughly 52% of the vote. Briner, an investment manager with two decades of experience at UNC-Chapel Hill and Michael Bloomberg's family office, ran as a financial professional rather than a culture-war candidate, though he has aligned with national Republican positions by eliminating DEI programs and signing State Financial Officers Foundation letters backing Trump administration actions on diversity and corporate governance. On tariffs, however, he publicly warned they would cause economic pain for North Carolina families and businesses. The bulk of official press releases cover routine financial administration—bond ratings, pension updates, unclaimed property, and state health plan premiums—with limited direct commentary on federal policy.
