NC Department of State Treasurer
U.S. state government agency (led by a Republican elected official)
Background
The Department of State Treasurer is one of the executive offices created under the North Carolina constitution, and the Treasurer is chosen in a statewide election. Its communications are official press releases and statements on nctreasurer.gov, not independent journalism. Republican Dale Folwell served two terms. He did not run again and instead made an unsuccessful bid for governor. Republican Brad Briner won the 2024 election and took office on January 1, 2025. He has a background in investment management, including at Bloomberg Philanthropies and the UNC system. Recent releases from his office include the April 2026 hiring of a new general counsel, a May 2026 letter asking Wake County commissioners to delay and reconsider their vote on the WakeMed/Atrium merger, and a June 2026 statement praising the state budget's increases for the State Health Plan. The same budget set aside $20 million, administered by the department, for Hurricane Helene recovery. Because the content is self-published by a government office, it presents the agency's actions favorably and does not include outside critical scrutiny. I found no sign that it systematically praises or criticizes the federal administration.
