Background

NC Newsline traces its roots to NC Policy Watch, founded in 2004 by Chris Fitzsimon under the North Carolina Justice Center, a liberal advocacy and research organization in Raleigh. In that form it operated primarily as a commentary outlet with an openly progressive orientation, covering state budget and social-policy issues from a center-left perspective. In 2017, the affiliated States Newsroom project began expanding the model to other states, using the Hopewell Fund—a left-aligned fiscal sponsor—as an incubator. States Newsroom became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2019. In February 2023, formal ownership of NC Policy Watch was transferred from the NC Justice Center to States Newsroom, and the outlet was relaunched under its current name, NC Newsline, to signal a broader reporting mission beyond pure commentary. Media Bias/Fact Check rates NC Newsline as left-biased, noting that editorial positions consistently align with progressive stances on reproductive rights, LGBTQ issues, climate, and gun policy. Since the start of the Trump administration's second term in January 2025, the outlet's opinion section has been consistently critical, highlighting lawsuits against federal policies, cuts to social programs, and public-opinion data showing North Carolinian skepticism of the administration.
