Background
The outlet began in 2004 as NC Policy Watch, a commentary-focused project of the Raleigh-based North Carolina Justice Center, a progressive advocacy and research group. It grew into a fuller news operation while affiliated with States Newsroom, a national nonprofit network of state-focused outlets, starting around 2019. In February 2023, ownership formally transferred from the NC Justice Center to States Newsroom, and the outlet was rebranded from NC Policy Watch to NC Newsline later that year to reflect its shift toward daily news reporting alongside commentary.
