Background

The State Auditor's office comes from the 1868 North Carolina Constitution, which made the auditor an elected official overseeing the state's fiscal affairs. A 1921 law gave the office the power to examine, audit and adjust accounts. Article III, Section 7 of the state constitution still provides for the auditor to be elected by voters. Democrat Beth Wood held the office from 2009 until she resigned in December 2023. A Democratic appointee then served on an interim basis. Republican Dave Boliek won the 2024 election and took office in January 2025. Under Boliek, the office has expanded, reopening a Charlotte office in February 2026. It has also announced reviews of the state Education Lottery, voter-approved bonds and the UNC system, and has audited its own operations. Recent output includes financial statement audits, investigative reports on local governments such as Cary and Ronda, and reviews of items like state vehicle use at NC State University. The office presents its work as nonpartisan, but the auditor is elected on a party ballot. The office also issues statements on state legislation, such as one on a veto of House Bill 958. Its reports are primary-source government documents that are generally cited by news outlets. Critics and supporters may disagree about which audits get priority.
