Background

The New American was founded in 1985 as a merger of two earlier John Birch Society publications: American Opinion, launched in 1956 by JBS founder Robert Welch, and The Review of the News. The John Birch Society itself was founded in 1958 and became notorious during the Cold War era for extreme anti-communist positions, including Welch's claim that President Dwight Eisenhower was a communist agent — an allegation widely discredited. The magazine has consistently promoted limited constitutional government, U.S. withdrawal from the United Nations and international treaties, and resistance to what it calls the 'New World Order.' It has been classified by media watchdogs as far-right, with a mixed record on factual accuracy. The outlet operates as an in-house organ of the JBS rather than as an editorially independent publication. In recent years it has expanded its daily digital news output while continuing a monthly print edition. Its coverage of the Trump administration is selective: it applauds moves against globalist institutions but has published critical pieces when administration actions — such as U.S. payments to the UN, expanded beef imports, or growing tech-industry ties — appear to contradict its core constitutionalist and anti-globalist principles.
