Background

NHPR traces its origins to 1979, when about 50 New Hampshire residents incorporated as Granite State Public Radio and raised planning grants to launch a statewide public station. The flagship station, WEVO (89.1 FM), signed on from Concord on August 4, 1981. The organization was renamed New Hampshire Public Radio in the 1990s and expanded to round-the-clock broadcasting in 1991; six additional transmitter sites joined the network between 1992 and 2011, giving NHPR near-statewide coverage. By 2007 the annual budget had grown to $4.5 million, funded through listener contributions, business underwriting, and Corporation for Public Broadcasting grants. NHPR operates as an NPR affiliate and member station, airing NPR national news programs alongside a locally produced news staff that is one of the largest in the state. In July 2025, Congress passed a Trump-backed rescission package that eliminated approximately $400,000 in annual CPB funding the station had relied on, prompting NHPR to shift to a fully community-supported model. The station's CEO publicly called the administration's related executive order targeting public media 'mainly political theater' and joined a coalition of 28 public radio organizations in a legal brief arguing the order violated the First Amendment and separation of powers.
