Background

States Newsroom announced the launch of the New Jersey Monitor in July 2021 as its 23rd state outlet. It hired Terrence T. McDonald as editor. McDonald is a veteran New Jersey newspaper journalist who left The Record of Bergen County and has won state press association awards and open-records investigative awards. The outlet covers the Statehouse, state agencies, courts, elections and public policy, often with open-records reporting. States Newsroom as a whole has been criticized by some conservatives for its donor base, which includes left-leaning foundations and a union, and for its opinion section, which leans left. States Newsroom says its newsrooms have editorial independence and that donors have no say over coverage. The Monitor also republishes stories from States Newsroom's other state outlets and its national reporters, including coverage of federal policy and the Trump administration. Taken together, its perspective is a mainstream, government-accountability style of reporting. Its choice of stories and its opinion content lean modestly left.
