The New Jersey Monitor launched on July 28, 2021, as the 23rd subsidiary outlet of States Newsroom, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that builds state-level news organizations across the country. It is edited by Terrence T. McDonald, a veteran New Jersey journalist with more than two decades of experience covering the state. The outlet initially operated under fiscal sponsorship from the Hopewell Foundation while awaiting IRS approval of its own 501(c)(3) status. Its funding comes from a range of progressive-leaning and mainstream foundations, including the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Wyss Foundation, and AFSCME. Media Bias/Fact Check rates the outlet as 'Left' with high factual reporting, while AllSides places it as 'Lean Left.'
