Background

Founded in 1914, The New Republic built a reputation as an influential voice of American liberalism, though it went through a conservative-leaning stretch under owner Martin Peretz in the late 20th century and has also drawn criticism over past editorial controversies, including plagiarism and fabrication scandals (Stephen Glass) and instances of published material later criticized as racially insensitive. The magazine changed hands several times in the 2000s and 2010s, including a widely criticized 2012–2014 ownership stint under Chris Hughes that ended in a mass staff exodus after a management shake-up. Win McCormack, founder of the literary journal Tin House and a major Democratic Party donor, bought the magazine in 2016 and has served as chairman/editor-in-chief since. Under McCormack, the outlet has settled firmly into a progressive, anti-Trump editorial lane, with current editor Michael Tomasky steering opinion-heavy political coverage. It is a small-circulation but influential opinion and commentary publication rather than a large wire or breaking-news operation, and it makes no claim to political neutrality.
