Background

The Post was founded in 1801 as the New York Evening Post by Alexander Hamilton. It spent most of the 19th and 20th centuries as a liberal-leaning paper before it turned into a tabloid. Rupert Murdoch bought it in 1976 for about $30.5 million, and it has moved steadily to the right since then. It is known for sensational headlines, the Page Six gossip column and heavy sports and crime coverage. It endorsed Donald Trump in 2016 and has generally been friendly to Republicans, though it has criticized Trump at times, as in its sharp coverage of his 2022 post-election conduct. Its October 2020 story on Hunter Biden's laptop was restricted by Twitter and Facebook, which set off a long debate over media bias and platform moderation. Rupert Murdoch stepped back from running his companies in 2023, and in September 2025 a settlement gave Lachlan sole control. Under that deal, his three older siblings were bought out for an estimated $3.3 billion. In 2025 the company launched a California Post in Los Angeles. In October 2026 Trump hosted a dinner with News Corp leaders, including Murdoch and Post editor-in-chief Keith Poole.
