New York Public News Network
U.S. center-left
Background
The New York Public News Network was formally announced in January 2024 as a cooperative editorial arrangement among a dozen-plus New York public media newsrooms. Its founding members span the state geographically, from WNYC in New York City to North Country Public Radio (WSLU) in the far north and WBFO in Buffalo. The network was built on the model of shared content and coordinated editorial planning, with each originating station retaining editorial control over its own stories. Individual member stations are NPR affiliates with roots going back decades — WNYC, for instance, dates to 1924 and is among the most-listened-to public radio stations in the U.S. Funding for these stations historically combined listener memberships, CPB federal grants, and New York State education grants, but in 2025 Congress eliminated CPB appropriations under pressure from the Trump administration, leaving New York public stations facing a collective shortfall of at least $57 million. WNYC had already produced prominent Trump-critical programming such as 'Trump, Inc.' and 'This Week in Trump,' and WAMC publicly pledged to maintain its editorial standards despite the executive order targeting public media. The network as a whole reflects the editorial character of public radio: substantive, policy-focused coverage that critics on the right characterize as left-leaning, while the stations describe themselves as independent public-interest journalism.
