Background

The New York Times was founded in 1851 by journalist Henry J. Raymond and financier George Jones as a general-interest daily in New York City. In 1896, Adolph S. Ochs, a Tennessee newspaper publisher, purchased the struggling paper and adopted the motto 'All the News That's Fit to Print,' steering it toward comprehensive, record-of-record journalism. Ownership passed through five generations of the Ochs-Sulzberger family; a dual-class share structure gives Class B shareholders — primarily the family — ten votes per share, effectively blocking hostile takeovers. The Times built a reputation for investigative and international reporting, accumulating more than 130 Pulitzer Prizes.
