Background

News.am launched in 2009 and was formally incorporated as News AM LLC in January 2011, with roots in the PanARMENIAN.Net media network. Its co-founder and current sole owner, Armenika Kiviryan, studied international journalism and previously worked for Russian media outlets Regnum and Russkaya Mysl before building News.am into a standalone operation. By 2018, Kiviryan had bought out her co-founders and held full ownership. The outlet publishes in Armenian, Russian, English, and Turkish, targeting both domestic audiences and the global Armenian diaspora; it reports roughly 10 million monthly visitors, with the majority from Armenia and a significant share from Russia and the West. A 2022 International Republican Institute poll found News.am to be the most trusted domestic online outlet among Armenian respondents, reflecting broad readership across political lines. The Armenian media landscape is deeply polarized between outlets seen as loyal to Prime Minister Pashinyan's pro-Western government and those aligned with the pro-Russian opposition; News.am is generally viewed as occupying a mainstream rather than firmly partisan position, though its owner's background in Russian-linked media has drawn occasional scrutiny. The outlet covers the full range of Armenian political life, including opposition figures such as former President Robert Kocharyan, as well as international affairs in the South Caucasus.
