Background

The paper traces its roots to 1883 and became the Daytona Beach News-Journal after later mergers of local papers. The Davidson family owned it for 82 years, until a group of investors bought it on March 31, 2010 and formed Halifax Media Group. New Media Investment Group announced its acquisition of Halifax in November 2014, and GateHouse Media took over its 36 papers in 2015. GateHouse merged with Gannett in 2019, creating the largest U.S. newspaper chain by number of papers. Under chain ownership, the paper has faced the staff reductions, consolidated printing and shared regional content common across Gannett. Its editorial board has endorsed candidates from both parties over the years. It has endorsed Democrats and Republicans, and a 2020 editorial endorsed "anyone but Trump." Its news reporting is mostly local and state-focused and is not tied to a single party. My searches did not turn up a clear record of its recent editorial positions on the second Trump administration. Readers should treat the "mostly neutral" rating as provisional.
