Background

NewsBusters launched in 2005 as the MRC's blog. The MRC was founded in 1987 by L. Brent Bozell III to document what it sees as liberal bias in the media. The site publishes daily posts and video clips, often from MRC analysts, that criticize coverage by networks such as ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC, as well as late-night comedy and social media companies. The MRC also runs other projects, including MRC Free Speech America, which tracks what it calls tech censorship, and CNSNews.com. It is funded by conservative foundations and donors. Robert Mercer was its largest donor from about 2008 to 2017, giving at least $20 million through his family foundation, and his daughter Rebekah Mercer has served on its board. Fact-checking and media-bias raters describe NewsBusters as strongly right-leaning and opinionated. They note that it mostly relies on selected clips and quotes to make its case, and that it has promoted claims later disputed, for example on climate change and election issues. Under Trump's second term, its content has generally been supportive of the administration and aligned with its criticism of the press.
