Background

Seven West Media launched The Nightly on 26 February 2024. It was pitched at 'smart Australians' on the east coast, where The West Australian's parent company had little print presence. Although it targets eastern states readers, it is edited and produced in Perth. Anthony De Ceglie was its first editor-in-chief, and Christopher Dore is now listed in that role. Seven West Media says the site offers 'commonsense mainstream middle' journalism, a pitch aimed partly at advertisers. Its political orientation is usually described as centre-right, in line with The West Australian, though its sister papers' stance is not identical to its own. In 2025 Seven West Media announced a merger with Southern Cross Media. Kerry Stokes was due to step down as chair, and the Stokes family would keep about 20% through his son Ryan's board seat. For U.S. coverage it relies on licensed partners, including the Daily Mail, The Economist, The New York Times and The Washington Post. Because those outlets differ in outlook, its coverage of Trump's second term is likely to vary by article. My searches did not turn up a detailed study of that coverage, so the 'mixed' label is tentative.
