Background

The North Carolina Attorney General's office traces its roots to the colonial era, and the position was formalized in the state's 1776 constitution as a legislative appointment. The 1868 state constitution transformed it into a popularly elected executive office with duties prescribed by law. The NCDOJ today encompasses the NC State Crime Lab, the NC Justice Academy, and law enforcement training standards divisions, in addition to its core legal functions representing state agencies and handling criminal appeals. Jeff Jackson, a Democrat and Army National Guard officer who previously served as a Gaston County prosecutor, state senator, and one-term U.S. congressman, won the office in November 2024 and was sworn in on January 1, 2025.
