Background

Rose Hoban founded North Carolina Health News in November 2011 after years as a health reporter at North Carolina Public Radio (WUNC), where she saw colleagues laid off and health coverage shrink across NC newsrooms. She launched the outlet as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to fill that gap, making it one of the earlier state-level nonprofit health journalism ventures in the South. The organization is incorporated as North Carolina Health News Inc. (EIN 45-3913463) and has remained independently operated with no corporate parent. Funding has grown over time to include major regional foundations such as the Duke Endowment and Cone Health Foundation, as well as national journalism-support organizations including Press Forward and the Local News Lab. It subscribes to editorial-independence standards set by the Institute for Nonprofit News, which bar donors from influencing coverage. Hoban's earlier reporting on a for-profit psychiatric hospital and on European addiction policy won national journalism awards, including Columbia-DuPont and Edward R. Murrow honors. In 2025–2026, the outlet has focused heavily on the impacts of the federal 'One Big Beautiful Bill' Medicaid cuts on North Carolina residents, consistently framing the legislation in terms of coverage loss, premium increases, and rural hospital strain — coverage that reflects a strong emphasis on healthcare access as a public good.
