North Carolina Lawyers Weekly was founded in 1988 and became the state's primary legal trade publication, covering decisions from the North Carolina Supreme Court, the North Carolina Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Courts in the state, and the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. For much of its existence the outlet was part of The Dolan Company, a Minneapolis-based chain that operated similar Lawyers Weekly titles in multiple states. The Dolan Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in early 2014 and emerged under new ownership by Bayside Capital, an affiliate of H.I.G. Capital, later the same year. GateHouse Media acquired the business in 2015 and rebranded it as BridgeTower Media in 2016. When GateHouse merged with Gannett Co. in 2019, BridgeTower became a Gannett subsidiary; Transom Capital Group, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm, then purchased BridgeTower from Gannett in November 2020 and remains the owner today.
