Background

NTD was founded in 2001 in New York by Chinese American practitioners of Falun Gong, a spiritual movement that has been severely persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since 1999. The outlet was created partly to report on that persecution and to provide an alternative to CCP-controlled media. It began as a Chinese-language broadcaster and expanded over time; in July 2020 it launched a 24/7 English-language channel distributed in the U.S. and UK. By 2013, NTD had begun formally collaborating with The Epoch Times, sharing content and resources, and both outlets now operate under Epoch Media Group. Media analysts at Media Bias/Fact Check rate NTD as right-biased and 'questionable' for promoting conspiracy theories and lacking sourcing transparency; AllSides rates it 'Lean Right.' NTD executives have denied that the outlet formally represents Falun Gong, but its editorial mission explicitly includes exposing CCP human rights abuses, and its broader political coverage consistently aligns with conservative and right-wing perspectives. In Canada, NTD received public funding through the Canada Media Fund, a relationship that drew scrutiny given the outlet's ideological affiliations.
