Background
Josh Stein was born in 1966 and raised in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He earned a BA from Dartmouth College in 1988 and a JD from Harvard Law School, then worked in consumer protection at the North Carolina Department of Justice starting in 2001. He served in the North Carolina State Senate from 2009 to 2016 representing a Durham-area district. From 2017 to 2025 he served as North Carolina Attorney General, where he pursued cases on consumer protection and reproductive rights. He was elected the 76th Governor of North Carolina in November 2024, defeating Republican Mark Robinson, and took office on January 1, 2025 — becoming the state's first Jewish governor. As governor, Stein faces a Republican-controlled General Assembly that has overridden several of his vetoes, including on immigration enforcement and transgender rights legislation.
