Background

OAN launched on July 4, 2013, founded by Robert Herring Sr. and initially debuted in partnership with The Washington Times. Herring directed producers to promote pro-Trump and anti-Clinton stories and to suppress coverage of Russian interference in the 2016 election. DirecTV, an AT&T subsidiary, provided up to 90% of the network's revenue through carriage fees, per Herring's court testimony. OAN became a publicly favored outlet of Donald Trump, who repeatedly promoted it during and after his first term. After the 2020 election, OAN extensively promoted election-fraud conspiracy theories, drawing defamation lawsuits from voting-technology firms Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic; it settled with Smartmatic in April 2024 and with a former Dominion executive in September 2023, while the main Dominion suit remained unresolved as of mid-2026. DirecTV dropped OAN in April 2022 citing business reasons; OAN sued, but a California judge dismissed most of its claims. The network since rebuilt distribution through its OAN+ streaming service, Spectrum (added July 2025), and a DIRECTV advertising partnership (December 2025). In May 2025, Trump adviser Kari Lake announced OAN's newsfeed would power Voice of America, cementing the network's close relationship with the second Trump administration.
