One America News Network
U.S. right (pro-Trump)
Background
OAN launched on July 4, 2013, through a partnership between Herring Networks and The Washington Times. It was positioned as a conservative alternative to larger cable news channels. Internal emails reported in 2017 indicated that Herring directed the channel to push Trump's candidacy, play down stories such as police shootings and Russian aggression, and steer away from problems for the new president. Trump praised the network during his first term, and it became a prominent outlet for his supporters. After the 2020 election, OAN aired false claims about voting machines and fraud. Smartmatic sued Herring Networks for defamation in 2021, and the case settled in April 2024 on undisclosed terms. Newsmax, a rival network, paid $40 million to settle a similar Smartmatic suit. Media-bias raters and critics describe OAN as strongly right-leaning, with a record of promoting conspiracy theories. It remains much smaller than Fox News and Newsmax.
