One America News
U.S. far-right
Background
Founded in 2013 by Robert Herring Sr., OAN launched as a conservative alternative to Fox News and built close ties to the Trump White House during his first term, with Trump frequently praising and promoting it. The network gained notoriety for amplifying false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, which led to defamation lawsuits from voting-technology companies Smartmatic and Dominion Voting Systems and from former Dominion employee Eric Coomer; OAN has faced significant legal costs and some settlements/rulings against it over these claims. Its business was long dependent on carriage by AT&T's DirecTV, which supplied the bulk of its revenue until DirecTV dropped the channel in April 2022 amid declining viewership and advertiser pressure, prompting a $1 billion lawsuit from OAN against AT&T/DirecTV. Several former OAN journalists and producers have publicly described editorial pressure to favor pro-Trump narratives and avoid negative Trump coverage. Fact-checking and media-bias organizations have repeatedly rated OAN as a low-credibility, highly partisan source prone to conspiracy theories and misinformation. In the current Trump administration, OAN continues to produce friendly, largely uncritical coverage, including exclusive interviews with Trump and sympathetic framing of his policies, while its overall audience and distribution remain much smaller than larger conservative outlets like Fox News or Newsmax.
