Background

Organiser was founded on July 3, 1947, weeks before Indian independence, after RSS-linked activists in the Punjab–Delhi region raised funds by selling shares in the newly created Bharat Prakashan Trust. Its founding purpose was to publicize the RSS's positions on Partition and the direction of independent India. Over the following decades it became the primary English-language forum for Hindu nationalist thought, publishing columns by figures such as Deendayal Upadhyay and L. K. Advani, who later led the BJP. It was converted from a newspaper to a magazine format in April 2014, coinciding with the BJP's national electoral rise under Narendra Modi. Scholars of Indian politics consistently classify it as an organ of the RSS, even though the RSS has at times formally disclaimed it — most notably when a 2015 Organiser article describing the Dadri lynching as a 'natural reaction' to cow slaughter generated widespread criticism and prompted the RSS to distance itself publicly. The current editor is Prafulla Ketkar. Its print circulation stands at around 50,000, with a claimed cross-platform reach of 2.5 million. It remains one of the oldest continuously published weeklies in independent India and a central forum for Hindutva perspectives on politics, culture, and international affairs.
