Background
Outlook was launched in October 1995 by the Rajan Raheja Group under founding editor-in-chief Vinod Mehta, who built it into a bold, investigative rival to India Today and other established newsweeklies over his 17-year tenure. In 2003 the magazine's operations were demerged into the standalone entity Outlook Publishing (India) Pvt. Ltd., still controlled by the Raheja family. Mehta left in 2012 and died in 2015; since then the magazine has cycled through several editors, including Ruben Banerjee, who departed in 2021 after tension over a cover story critical of Uttar Pradesh's chief minister, an episode widely cited as evidence of growing caution under corporate ownership. Press critics, including a 2025 Newslaundry analysis, have argued the magazine's political reporting has grown more subdued and less confrontational toward the Modi government compared with its 1990s and 2000s heyday. Outlook has expanded into digital-first coverage and multiple verticals (Outlook Business, Outlook Traveller, regional-language editions) under CEO Indranil Roy. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center with mostly factual reporting. As an Indian publication, its coverage of the U.S. Trump administration centers on bilateral issues like tariffs, trade deals and the India-Pakistan ceasefire dispute, generally through a reporting lens rather than sustained editorial advocacy for or against Washington.
