Background

Arif Nizami, a veteran Pakistani journalist and briefly a caretaker federal minister, founded Pakistan Today in 2010. He had left The Nation and Nawa-i-Waqt in 2009 after a falling-out with his uncle Majid Nizami, who ran the family newspaper group. Nizami had been a part-owner and director of that group. The paper is published from Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad. It belongs to the Nizami family's English-language journalism tradition, but it is independent of the Nawa-i-Waqt group, which is known for a conservative, nationalist line. Arif Nizami died on 21 July 2021. I did not find a documented change of ownership or funding since then. A media-ownership database lists its editor as M A Niazi and its political alignment as liberal and moderate. I did not find a documented major controversy or retraction involving the paper. Like other Pakistani papers, it works under pressure from the state and advertisers. Its coverage of Trump's second term is mostly news about U.S.–Pakistan relations rather than commentary on U.S. domestic politics. I could not sample its recent output in depth.
