Background

PBS NewsHour traces its roots to 1973, when journalists Robert MacNeil and Jim Lehrer covered the Senate Watergate hearings gavel-to-gavel for public television. In 1975, MacNeil launched 'The Robert MacNeil Report' on WNET in New York, with Lehrer reporting from Washington; the show was quickly picked up nationally by PBS and renamed 'The MacNeil/Lehrer Report.' In 1983 it expanded to a full hour as 'The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour,' becoming the first hour-long nightly national news broadcast in the U.S. MacNeil and Lehrer formed their own production company, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, in 1981; cable mogul John Malone's Liberty Media acquired a 67 percent equity stake in 1994, though the founders retained editorial control. After MacNeil's retirement in 1995 the program became 'The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer,' and in 2009 it was rebranded 'PBS NewsHour.' In 2014, MacNeil/Lehrer Productions was donated to WETA-TV and reorganized as the nonprofit NewsHour Productions LLC. The outlet has long drawn criticism from conservatives for left-of-center guest selection and framing — a Media Research Center study covering the first half of 2026 found liberal-leaning guests outnumbered conservative-leaning guests by a ratio of more than 5-to-1. The Trump administration's second term brought an existential funding fight: Trump signed an executive order in May 2025 directing agencies to cut off PBS and NPR, alleging political bias; a federal judge blocked that order on First Amendment grounds, but Congress separately rescinded $1.1 billion in CPB appropriations in mid-2025, leading the CPB to dissolve in January 2026. PBS sued the administration over the defunding. PBS NewsHour Weekend aired its last episode in January 2026 and the West Coast production unit closed in December 2025 as the organization restructured around private funding.
