Background

People's World descends from the Daily Worker, launched in Chicago in 1924 by Communist Party activists and labor organizers. A separate West Coast edition, also called People's World, began publication in San Francisco in 1938. Both branches faced severe circulation losses during the McCarthyite anti-Communist campaigns of the late 1940s and 1950s, forcing the West Coast paper to switch from daily to weekly publication. The two strands were consolidated in 1987 when the West Coast People's Daily World merged with the New York-based Daily World, which was itself the renamed successor to the Daily Worker. The merged paper went through several name changes — People's Daily World, then People's Weekly World — before settling on People's World. In 2009 it relaunched as a digital-only, daily online outlet. Throughout its history it has remained the primary English-language voice of the CPUSA, covering labor, civil rights, anti-war, and socialist politics from an explicitly Marxist perspective. It has never concealed its political affiliation and openly describes its editorial mission as partisan to the working class and to 'Bill of Rights socialism.'
