PinkNews
UK left / LGBTQ+ advocacy-oriented
Background
PinkNews was founded by Benjamin Cohen in July 2005, initially as a print publication aimed at the LGBTQ+ community in the UK; it shifted to online-only within its first year. Cohen started the outlet because he felt existing gay media relied too heavily on adult advertising and gave insufficient attention to news coverage. The site grew into what it describes as the world's largest LGBTQ+ digital publisher, with a primarily UK and US audience. Media bias analysts, including Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides, consistently rate PinkNews as left-leaning with high factual accuracy. In 2024, a BBC investigation and reporting by other outlets exposed allegations of a workplace culture of bullying and sexual harassment at PinkNews, with multiple former staff members accusing Cohen and his husband, director Anthony James, of misconduct. Following that reputational damage and apparent financial pressures, PinkNews announced plans to move to a 'reporter-free newsroom,' laying off much of its editorial staff. Its coverage of the Trump administration's second term has been sharply critical, with extensive reporting on executive orders targeting transgender healthcare, LGBTQ+ rights rollbacks, and what it characterizes as broader attacks on civil liberties.
