Background

PitchBook was founded on March 1, 2007, by John Gabbert and a small team in Seattle, Washington. Gabbert identified a gap between the rich data available for public markets through terminals like Bloomberg and the fragmented, hard-to-verify information available for private markets such as venture capital and private equity deals. The company built a SaaS platform aggregating data on private company financials, fund performance, and deal activity. Morningstar, which had been an investor since 2009, fully acquired PitchBook in December 2016 for roughly $225 million. PitchBook has since operated as an independent subsidiary, retaining its brand, leadership, and editorial separation from its parent. Over time it expanded beyond a pure data platform by adding a newsroom of financial journalists, analysts, and data reporters covering private markets, emerging technology sectors, and macroeconomic trends. Its editorial standards explicitly require separation between its sales teams and journalists. Because its audience is institutional — fund managers, investors, and dealmakers — its coverage of government policy focuses on market consequences (regulatory shifts, tariff impacts on deal flow) rather than partisan framing, and it has not developed a reputation for ideological bias in either direction.
