Background

PJ Media was founded in 2004 as Pajamas Media by blogger Charles Johnson (Little Green Footballs) and screenwriter Roger L. Simon as a conservative group blog aggregating center-right and right-leaning writers. The site rebranded as PJ Media in October 2011. Early funding came from venture capital investors including software entrepreneur Aubrey Chernick, who became the majority backer. In 2008 the company launched PJTV, a subscription-based internet video network that debuted at the Republican National Convention; it shut down in May 2016 after Chernick withdrew his financial support. Salem Media Group, a publicly traded Christian and conservative broadcast and digital media company, acquired PJ Media in March 2019 and folded it into its Townhall Media digital portfolio. In May 2026, Salem Media announced a definitive agreement to be acquired by WaterStone (The Christian Community Foundation, Inc.), a Christian nonprofit and donor-advised fund organization, in a deal expected to close in August 2026 that would take Salem private. Throughout its history PJ Media has published opinion-heavy content advocating limited government, skepticism of immigration and progressive cultural policies, and support for Republican political figures; media bias trackers such as Media Bias/Fact Check and Ad Fontes Media consistently place it on the right to far-right of the political spectrum.
