Background

Politico launched on January 23, 2007, backed by media heir Robert Allbritton and led by two Washington Post veterans, editor-in-chief John Harris and executive editor Jim VandeHei. It quickly became the go-to insider source for Capitol Hill coverage, earning a reputation for scoops and horse-race political journalism. In 2011, it launched Politico Pro, a premium subscription product targeting lobbyists and government affairs professionals, which became its primary revenue engine. In 2014 it co-founded Politico Europe with Axel Springer. VandeHei and star reporter Mike Allen departed in 2017 to launch Axios. Axel Springer bought out the Allbritton family's stake and completed full ownership in late 2021 for roughly $1 billion. Media bias analysts from AllSides, Media Bias/Fact Check, and Ad Fontes consistently place Politico in the center-left or lean-left range, citing word choice, story selection, and analysis that tilts slightly liberal. In 2025, an Axel Springer board member resigned citing what he called left-wing bias at Politico; in April 2026, Politico journalists sent a letter to their new editor-in-chief warning that Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner's involvement risked undermining the outlet's editorial credibility. Former chief Washington correspondent Ryan Lizza publicly accused Politico of insufficient critical coverage of the Trump administration, a dispute that led to the outlet issuing him a cease-and-desist. Despite these tensions, Politico remains one of the most widely read sources among Washington insiders across the political spectrum.
