Port City Daily
U.S. local independent
Background
Port City Daily is a digital-only newspaper serving Wilmington, North Carolina, and nearby New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties. It is owned by Local Voice Media (also known as Local Daily Media and Davis Media LLC), a privately held company founded by Tom Davis, who in 2008 launched the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily (WYDaily) in Virginia as one of the first radio-driven online newspapers in the country. The company later expanded to Wilmington, acquiring several local FM radio stations and launching Port City Daily to provide an equivalent digital news service for the Cape Fear region. The outlet has published articles dating at least to 2014 and concentrates on local government meetings, planning boards, courts, education, healthcare, and the business community. Shea Carver, a journalist with 22 years of experience in Wilmington print media, joined as editor-in-chief in October 2020. Port City Daily operates on a freemium model combining free access with paid digital subscriptions. None of the major third-party media bias organizations — AllSides, Ad Fontes Media, or Media Bias/Fact Check — have issued a formal rating for the outlet. Coverage of Trump-era federal policy has been factual and locally focused, reporting on topics such as ICE enforcement in North Carolina, federal wind-energy lease buyouts affecting the region, and proposed hemp legislation — without evident pro- or anti-administration framing.
