Background

Power Engineering was established in 1896, making it one of the oldest continuously published energy trade magazines in the United States. For most of its history it was published by PennWell Corporation, a Tulsa, Oklahoma-based specialist business media company that also produced the Oil & Gas Journal and the POWERGEN International trade show. In 2018, PennWell was acquired by Clarion Events, a British events and media firm backed by The Blackstone Group private equity fund. In January 2025, Clarion Events rebranded Power Engineering under the umbrella name 'Factor This Power Engineering' and merged it with three sibling titles—Renewable Energy World, POWERGRID International, and Hydro Review—to create a single integrated energy media platform. The publication has historically focused on North American power plant design, construction, and operation, writing primarily for engineers, plant managers, and utility executives rather than a general audience.
