Background

Nelson Poynter, owner of the St. Petersburg Times, founded the Modern Media Institute in 1975 and willed control of Times Publishing Company to it upon his death, giving the school a revenue base tied to the newspaper. The institute was renamed the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in 1984. Over the following decades it became a leading training and ethics resource for journalists, hosting seminars and publishing analysis of newsroom practices. In 2018 it acquired PolitiFact, the fact-checking operation, expanding its public-facing role. Poynter launched an International Fact-Checking Network and has grown into a significant voice on journalism industry trends. Its funders include liberal-leaning philanthropies (MacArthur, Knight, Craig Newmark Philanthropies) alongside the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, giving it a broadly pro-press-freedom, institutionalist orientation. Since January 2025, Poynter's commentary section has tracked more than 100 federal actions it characterizes as attacks on the press and has published pieces critical of the Trump administration's treatment of journalists, placing it clearly in the critical camp toward the current administration.
