Background

The name 'Pravda' (Russian for 'truth') traces to a workers' newspaper founded in 1912 in St. Petersburg, which became the flagship daily of the Soviet Communist Party and reached a peak circulation of roughly 12 million during the Soviet era. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, the paper was briefly shut down by President Boris Yeltsin, then briefly passed through Greek ownership before the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) acquired it in 1997 — the print newspaper it runs today is a separate, CPRF-owned outlet. In 1999, a group of senior former Pravda journalists, led by Vadim Gorshenin, founded an online outlet called Pravda Online; after a legal dispute, courts permitted both the CPRF print paper and Gorshenin's website to use the Pravda name. Pravda.ru evolved away from its Soviet-era roots toward Russian nationalism and tabloid-style pro-Kremlin commentary targeting global audiences. NewsGuard, a media credibility firm, rates Pravda.ru at 7.5 out of 100 points and has documented repeated publication of false claims, particularly about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Researchers at the Atlantic Council, DFRLab, and NewsGuard have also identified a broader 'Pravda Network' — more than 193 Kremlin-affiliated websites, distinct from but linked to Pravda.ru — that has systematically seeded Russian disinformation into Western AI systems and news aggregators. As of 2026, DFRLab documented the Pravda Network continuing to push sanctioned Kremlin-affiliated content to shape international perceptions of Ukraine.
