Progress NC Action
U.S. left/progressive
Background
Founded in 2011, Progress NC Action is the 501(c)(4) advocacy and electoral arm of Progress North Carolina, working alongside the group's 501(c)(3) charitable affiliate. It is one of roughly 20 state-based partners in the national ProgressNow network, which grew out of coordinated progressive infrastructure built in the 2000s. The group is chaired by Dean Debnam, a Democratic donor and former Public Policy Polling owner, and its board has included figures tied to other Democratic-aligned organizations such as America Votes. Progress NC Action produces research, opposition tracking, press releases, and digital content aimed at influencing North Carolina political coverage and public opinion, and it has been a frequent critic of Republican state legislators and, more recently, of Trump administration policies as they affect North Carolina. Because it operates as a political advocacy organization rather than a journalism outlet, its material is generally understood by watchdog groups and researchers as opposition messaging rather than neutral reporting. It has not undergone major public ownership changes since its founding, remaining under the same nonprofit structure.
