Background

WJZY (channel 46) began in the 1960s and was for years an independent station in Charlotte. It carried Charlotte Hornets basketball from 1992 to 1998. In 2013 Fox bought it and made it the market's Fox affiliate, swapping with WCCB (channel 18), which moved to The CW. Fox branded it 'Fox 46' and ran it as an owned-and-operated station. In 2019 Fox announced the sale of WJZY and WMYT-TV to Nexstar for about $45 million, and Nexstar took over in 2020. Nexstar relaunched the newsroom under the 'Queen City News' name in January 2022, dropping the Fox name from its news branding. The site, qcnews.com, uses a mix of local reporting and content shared across Nexstar stations and The Hill/NewsNation. Nexstar has drawn criticism from media-ownership critics over consolidation, centralized content, and its own regulatory dealings, including the TEGNA merger approved under the Trump-era FCC. Local newsroom coverage is generally regarded as standard local TV news, and media-bias raters typically place such stations near the center or slightly right of center. The Charlotte market is competitive, with WBTV, WSOC, and WCNC as the main rivals.
