Background

The Quint launched in January 2015 as a mobile-first, English-and-Hindi digital publication under Quintillion Media, started by Raghav Bahl and his wife Ritu Kapur after Bahl's exit from Network18 following its takeover by Reliance Industries. Bahl personally injected significant capital into the venture over several funding rounds, making him and his family the outlet's dominant financial backers alongside advertising and subscription revenue. The Quint built a reputation for youth-oriented, socially liberal reporting and runs an IFCN-certified fact-checking unit called WebQoof. It has drawn sustained criticism from right-leaning Indian outlets and commentators for editorial positions seen as consistently unfavorable to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP, including a 2018 controversy over a contributor's comment about Modi that triggered public backlash. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center with high factual standards. Its opinion vertical extends this left-leaning orientation to international coverage, including US politics, where pieces on the Trump administration have generally scrutinized trade tariffs, immigration crackdowns, and visa restrictions affecting Indian nationals and businesses.
