Background

Railway Gazette International is one of the oldest continuously published industry journals in the world, tracing its origins to May 1835 when The Railway Magazine was founded by Effingham Wilson at the very beginning of the railway age. The publication went through several name changes reflecting industry consolidation: it became Herapath's Railway Journal in January 1894, was reborn as The Railway Gazette in July 1905 to cover railway commercial and financial affairs, and merged with The Railway Times in April 1914. It absorbed the Railway Engineer in February 1935, and adopted its current name, Railway Gazette International, in October 1970 to reflect its global reach. For most of the late 20th and early 21st centuries it operated under DVV Media Group, a Hamburg-based European publisher serving transport and logistics sectors. In January 2026, Rotterdam-based ProMedia Group acquired the Railway Gazette Group along with other transport titles from DVV Media International. The publication is a trade journal—not a general-interest or opinion outlet—and its editorial focus is technical, operational, and commercial rather than ideological. Its coverage of Trump administration rail policy has been factual and sector-specific, noting both funding increases and the administration's pause of major transit projects tied to DEI compliance reviews.
