Background

RCR Wireless News was founded in 1982 in Golden, Colorado as Radio Communications Report (RCR), a print magazine covering the emerging cellular and wireless industry. Crain Communications, a major trade-press publisher with titles such as Advertising Age and Modern Healthcare, acquired it in July 1992 and expanded its reach as wireless grew into a mass-market industry. During the 2008–2009 recession, Crain shut the print edition on March 3, 2009. Arden Media Company, a small privately held firm, bought the title and relaunched it as an online-only outlet in September 2009, retaining much of the original editorial staff and relocating headquarters to Austin, Texas. Arden Media also operates TelecomCareers and Enterprise IoT Insights, keeping its portfolio squarely in the telecom sector. As of 2026, Editor-in-Chief Sean Kinney leads the newsroom; the company's annual revenue is estimated at roughly $5.5 million. The outlet covers 5G, AI infrastructure, IoT, spectrum auctions, and industry M&A for an audience of engineers, executives, policymakers, analysts, and investors. Because its business model depends on telecom-industry advertisers and event sponsors, its editorial voice reflects industry interests rather than any political ideology.
