RealClearEducation (Opinion)
U.S. right-leaning
Background
RealClearEducation launched in late 2013 or early 2014 as a joint venture between the education consulting nonprofit Bellwether Education Partners — led by former Clinton White House adviser Andrew Rotherham — and RealClearPolitics.com. From the start, it combined news aggregation with original opinion content favoring an 'education reform' orientation that backed charter schools, school choice, Common Core, and test-based accountability. A peer-reviewed 2018 study by researcher Richard Phelps concluded the site's aggregation was systematically skewed toward Bellwether's policy positions and its funders' interests. In late 2016, Rotherham and editor Emmeline Zhao departed for The 74, another education reform-aligned outlet; their replacement, Christopher Beach, had been executive producer for former Republican Education Secretary William Bennett's radio program, signaling a more traditionally conservative editorial direction. RealClearEducation sits under RealClear Media Group, whose flagship RealClearPolitics is rated right-center by Media Bias/Fact Check and lean-right in original content by AllSides. The broader RealClear Holdings underwent a significant ownership shift in October 2025 when Stagwell Inc. purchased a 35% stake, joining Jamal Daniel's Crest Media and the original founders as major shareholders. Today the site aggregates education news from across the ideological spectrum but weights its original commentary toward conservative and market-oriented education policy.
