Background
The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft was founded in November 2019, with the unusual backing of George Soros's Open Society Foundations and the Charles Koch Foundation—each contributing $500,000—alongside other philanthropic donors. The institute was built around the idea of reversing decades of U.S. military interventionism and restoring diplomacy as the primary tool of foreign policy. Responsible Statecraft launched as its online publication to provide news analysis, commentary, and opinion aligned with those goals. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center in bias with mostly factual reporting, while AllSides rates it center, reflecting its transpartisan founding rationale. The outlet has been consistently critical of U.S. military spending, arms sales, and overseas commitments regardless of which party holds power. During the Trump second term, Responsible Statecraft has offered selective praise—for instance, welcoming renewed U.S.-Russia dialogue—while criticizing the administration's unconditional support for Israel and what it characterizes as strategic incoherence in the Western Hemisphere.
