Background

Revolver News was launched in May 2020 by Darren Beattie, who had served as a speechwriter in Trump's first White House until 2018, when he was dismissed after it emerged he had attended a 2016 conference featuring white nationalist speakers. Beattie founded the site as an explicitly pro-Trump alternative to mainstream conservative and liberal outlets. The site gained wide attention in 2021 for a series of articles claiming that unindicted 'co-conspirators' in January 6 cases pointed to FBI foreknowledge or orchestration of the Capitol breach — theories that PolitiFact and other fact-checkers rated as false or unsupported, but which Tucker Carlson amplified on Fox News and incorporated into his documentary series 'Patriot Purge.' Media Bias/Fact Check rates the outlet as right-biased with mixed factual reporting, citing poor sourcing practices and a lack of institutional transparency. In November 2020, Trump appointed Beattie to the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad; the Biden administration forced him to resign in 2022. When Trump returned to office in January 2025, Beattie was appointed Acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in February 2025, one of the department's top-ten roles. Beattie announced he was stepping back from day-to-day involvement with Revolver News upon taking the position, though he did not announce a formal ownership transfer. Throughout its existence the outlet has declined to disclose its ownership structure or full list of funders.
